"A different sense of time"
This is My Land (2006), 16mm, color, sound, 14 min
Glowing celluloid portraits mysteriously tell stories of a day-in-the-private-country-life of often singular individuals in their native landscapes. Ben Rivers' need to become involved with people comes through in both tender and clearly outside moments: a line of socks hung to dry inside while morning snow shines to meet the sill. One subject speaks from off camera with a rural recipe for how to grow a hedge in ten years time. Hang a thread for birds to perch, of whom in their idle will redeposit seeds unto the earth from fruit recently eaten.
